A town of this name in France, the site of an important fortress, was the object of fierce German assaults in World War 1 in which the town was razed.

 

The battle of Verdun, in which the German forces were attempting to reach Paris at all costs, lasted from February to June 1916.

Heroically defended by the French, it was a costly failure for the German Army, their casualties being 300,000.
