This French port on the Strait of Dover has been a major commercial seaport and centre of communications with England since at least the Middle Ages.

It was one of the main landing ports of the British Forces in 1914. In World War 11 it was the scene of much fighting and the old town was virtually destroyed.

It was the base for the German robot bombs (‘doodle bugs’) launched against Britain in 1944 until it was taken by Allied Forces in September of that year.
