Street Talk – Ray Street & Rooms Avenue, Invermay

June 29, 2018 | InvermayStreet & Suburb HistoryStreet Talk

Ray Street

Rachael Room was Daniel Room’s grand-daughter and this street name is a contraction of Rachael.

Rooms Avenue

Rooms Avenue runs into land originally owned by Daniel Room and Christina Room (wife of Daniel’s son, James). Originally a private road, there was a gate at each end.

Daniel Room built “Mayfield House”, which still stands today, and next door built “Ellerslie” (where Mr Tom Room AM, later to be Mayor of Launceston, was born). “Burwood” was the only other house in the area at that time, and was occupied by Captain Holyman.

James Room ran a big drapers shop in Brisbane Street at the turn of the century.
